Lying tucked away several miles down a twisty road and 30 km from Corfu town, the little resort of Agios Georgios (North), or San George as some locals call it, is a haven for lovers of a quiet restful holiday. So far the demands of the tourist trade have not spoiled the natural beauty of this delightful bay. It should be distinguished from another Corfu resort of the same name in the south of the island.

Map of North Corfu

Set on level land at the mouth of a wide valley between high rocky headlands, this collection of private houses, small hotels, tavernas and some apartments sprawls lazily behind the beach road.

Behind them is a countryside of fields, olive groves and wooded hills. The ancient olive trees with their contorted and perforated trunks form an greyish green carpet when viewed from a distance, but the views are made so much more interesting by the dark green colours of the numerous tall, pencil shaped cypress trees.

Certainly not known for vigorous nightlife, Agios Georgios suits families with young children, or couples and individuals of all ages who enjoy restful holidays in beautiful countryside, while at the same time providing endless fun for the kids on the beach or around the hotel pools. For a more lively night life it is easy to take a taxi or car the 12 miles or so to Sidari. For teenagers or adults wanting a boisterous, wild club scene San George is definitely not the place.

There is an ample choice of friendly Tavernas, Restaurants, tourists' Gift Shops, and the occasional small quality shop such as "M.A. Jewellery" for hand-made gold and siver jewellery. Many visitors miss the specialist Greek pottery (not tourist rubbish) of George Makri's shop, now sadly closed. Maybe he will re-open!

For everyday needs there are several small "supermarkets" such as Jennie's on the Pagi road and Patras on the beach road, and all are run by friendly local people.

You can pop into the small Internet Cafe at the Katoi Bar near at the beach (see Plans) and collect your web-based email or keep in touch with work ( if you really must).

Hire a Motor Bike or Scooter for the day, even a Mountain Bike (it is hilly), or spend a few hours Bowling or playing Billiards. Hire a boat or try the water sports available on the beach. (see Beach link)

New visitors to Agios Georgios, particularly from the UK or northern Europe, will notice the tranquil pace of life still found here.

Getting About

Regular sight on some roads

No need for a donkey though!

For the more energetic visitors there are numerous walks in and around San George some of which are described on these pages. To go further afield there are Mountain Bikes, Scooters and Motor bikes available in the resort.

There is a local bus to Corfu town (and villages directly on route) once a day. The buses are air-conditioned and the fares are very reasonable. (see Information link)

Otherwise taxis are available but naturally more expensive. George Rouvas (Tel. 26630 96419 or Mobile 6944 328254) from the nearby village of Pagi is often used by the hotel owners. His number is a useful one to keep.

To make the most of a holiday in this somewhat out-of-the-way resort a hire-car is helpful. We have hired cars from 2 local firms at considerably lower prices than the major companies, and have been very satisfied with the cars and service (see side panel Menu).
There are many places worth visiting. Choose from other coastal resorts such Arillas, Agios (San) Stefanos, Sidari, Roda, Acharavi, Kassiopi and numerous others or just visit the lot as Corfu is so small. For the real flavour of Corfu do not miss a slow meander through the beautiful countryside of the quiet central areas. ( See Link).

Our favourite "not to be missed" short car trips are to:

  • Afionas for drinks at Dionysos taverna to take in the magnificent view over Agios Georgios bay, and either the Three Brothers or Panorama Restaurants for spectacular evening sunsets.( See Afionas Link).
  • Pagi village ( See Link) for coffee or drinks at a local greek cafe-bar, and on up through Prinilas via the twisting hill road with its magnificent views to the small village of Makrades, now well known for its souvenir shops and the local residents who leap out into the road waving cars to stop to buy their goods. (If you do stop they will have your door open before you know !)
For a longer trip carry on through Makrades down through Lakones with more superb views over the rocky bays of the famous resort of Paleokastritsa.
Walks Guide booklet and map.
For walkers an excellent Guide booklet with map giving precise details of several walks is on sale at Theo's Hotel on the Pagi road and possibly some others. This guide is produced by Lance Chilton of Marengo Publications who publish similar guides to many Greek Islands. The map is really good as it shows even the smallest footpaths and is useful for just wandering around this area.

There are quite a few photographs to view.
